Improving healthcare delivery and access in rural communities
Healthcare systems in parts of East Africa face critical weaknesses including inadequate infrastructure, supply chain gaps, staffing shortages, and limited data systems — all of which compromise health outcomes for millions.
Maternal mortality, child malnutrition, and preventable disease outbreaks remain far too common in underserved communities due to systemic healthcare weaknesses.
The primary challenges included:
• Insufficient and poorly equipped health facilities
• Chronic shortages of trained health workers
• Weak supply chains causing medication stockouts
• Inadequate health information systems for evidence-based planning
We implemented a multi-layered health system strengthening program working with government health ministries and local health facilities.
We supported the rehabilitation and equipping of primary health facilities, ensuring communities have access to functional, well-supplied health services within reasonable distance.
We designed and delivered training programs for clinical and non-clinical health workers, focusing on essential skills, service quality, and community health approaches.
Community health workers are the backbone of primary healthcare in underserved areas. Investing in their training and support yields outsized returns in health outcomes.
The program significantly improved access to and quality of primary healthcare services in target areas.
Facility-based deliveries increased by 55%, immunization coverage improved by 40%, and medication stockout rates fell by 70%.
Key results:
• 55% increase in facility-based deliveries
• 40% improvement in immunization coverage
• 70% reduction in medication stockouts
• 500+ health workers trained and mentored
